Chessie System blue paint
Posted by Dave553 on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 4:34 PM

What paint is a good match for Athearn's Chessie System (NOT CSX) dark blue?  I've seen C&O blue, and B&O blue.  Either one of these, or something else? CSX blue is a different shade of blue.

Dave,

Take a look at Trucolor Paint.....#TCP-72 C&O/B&O Blue. It is near the bottom of this chart:

I have not used any Trucolor paint, but heard it is good and very close matches, if not dead-on.

Years ago, Floquil had a color called Diesel Dark Blue, which was a good match for B&O "Bando Blue". This was a fairly bright Royal Blue.  At some point, they changed the color so that it was a bit darker. C&O "Enchantment Blue" became the standard for C&O and B&O after C&O gained control of B&O in the early 1960's, and model paints in that shade came on the market later. It was darker than Bando Blue, and had a very subtle purple cast. That is the color adopted by Chessie System. Due to a color deficiency on my part, I can't say whether these prototype colors are actually matched correctly on available models or in available lines of model paint.

For what it's worth, B&O Bando Blue was Dupont Duco 254-35155, and B&O Gray was Dupont Duco 254-53716. I don't know the codes for C&O Enchantment Blue.

Hold on to your Chessie hats.. That blue paint could be either B&O's Royal Blue or C&O's Enchantment Blue depending on what shop did the painting.

Why is this you may wonder?

The Chessie roads was not merged under the Chessie banner so,the shops used their standard blue.

How about those WM Chessie units?

WM was under control of the B&O thus Royal Blue was used.Recall B&O took control of the WM well after C&O took control of the B&O in the early 60s and both operated as independent railroads.

Sounds to wild to be true correct? Ah,recall Royal Blue and Enchantment Blue was about the same color.

Thanks for the info! I think I'm going to try Enchantment Blue and see how close it is.

I thought You were looking for a C&O/B&O before they had anything to do with the Chessie system.

Ed,There was probably more original C&O and B&O units as there was Chessie units. That's why its important to chose one of the Chessie roads like Chessie(B&O)  because the signals would be B&O style, stations, towers maintenance sheds would be of B&O design. The majority  of the engines would be B&O or Chessie(B&O)-this all changed after the formation of CSX in 1980 and after that everything went down the tubes.

I can't say for sure, but I understand B&O GP35's and later units were delivered in Enchantment Blue because of C&O influence. I'm not sure about GP30's, but I'm sure pre-GP30 B&O units were delivered in Bando Blue (Bando means B and O). Some B&O shops may have had stocks of Bando Blue on hand and may have used it until the supply ran out, but the system standard was Enchantment Blue after the C&O took control. When Chessie System colors were adopted, Enchantment Blue was the standard blue used, and the stocks of Bando Blue were probably all used up by then. I think CSX blue is actually Enchantment Blue, or something very close to it.

Tom,The B&O never ran out of Royal Blue because the B&O shops kept ordering it like the C&O shops for Enchantment Blue. The front office could care less because both roads was independently operated since C&O had controlling interest. The B&O took control of the WM with C&O's blessing.

The C&O ordered the GP35s and all was delivered in Enchantment Blue.Had B&O had the money they would have place their order instead of C&O then the 35s would have been in Royal Blue.

Again as far as Chessie Blue you can use either Enchantment or Royal Blue.  For minor touch up a spray can of Dark Blue was used.

My father in Law worked at the Raceland(Ky) car shops and that's how I found out C&O was hiring brakemen.

Ever hear the story behind C&O buying the controlling interest of the B&O?

Larry, I can't dispute what you say because I just don't know. By the mid 1960's, it's probably hard to say what color paint was used because all the older units were looking pretty ratty, dirty, and worn by then.

I've heard lots of stories about the B&O losing its independence, but don't actually know what to believe.

I find it interesting that locomotives were lettered C&O/B&O in later years vs Chesapeake & Ohio/Baltimore & Ohio. It seems the blue/grey scheme had disappeared and dark blue with a yellow stripe and lettering was just being introduced.

I've heard lots of stories about the B&O losing its independence, but don't actually know what to believe. Tom

The only thing C&O did was pour money into the B&O for locomotives, track upgrades and introduce a simple scheme for both roads for a family resemblance and that was blue, yellow frame stripe with either C&O or B&O on the side of the hood.B&O kept its capitol dome herald and C&O kept the "C&O for progress" herald. Check the photos in the link to the Chessie archives for the great Chessie System locomotive paint schemes. Since C&O/B&O/WM wasn't merge under the Chessie banner the C&O and B&O wasn't in a big hurry to repaint their locomotives into the Chessie scheme.

Also new B&O freight cars had the Capitol dome herald. After the formation of the Chessie System new cars came in the Chessie "C" scheme and was sub-lettered for C&O,B&O and WM.
