Widow of Modeler Needs Advice re Partially-Built Pike in Newfoundland, Canada
Posted by BillyFloyd on Friday, August 26, 2016 11:37 AM

The husband of a Facebook friend, located in the province of Newfoundland, just passed away, leaving her uncertain what to do with a partially completed N-gauge layout. Her late husband poured heart and soul into the project, so the thought of simply dismantling it and throwing it away breaks her heart.  I'm halfway across the continent and have never seen the pike, but from photos it appears to be nicely done and constructed in reasonably transportable modules. Does anyone know of any model railroad clubs in Newfoundland or any other resources who might be able to help her find a better solution to her problem?

We have a few Canadian members and I hope that they can help you.

We had a thread about 5 months ago about what happens to my layout when I pass.  I cannot find it but maybe someone has a link.  I'm not sure there were any answers there, but more than few members really didn't care what happened after they were gone and thought the whole discussion was a waste of time.

I can see where the wife has an emotional and financial link to the layout.  But her husband may have been one of the "throw in a dumpster' guys.

This page has contact info for the NMRA in Canada.

One of the board members, George Jarvis, lives in Conception Bay, NL. He or others in the NMRA may be able to help or suggest a means to dispose of the layout.

Isn't Bob Boudreau in Newfoundland, too?  He used to post here every so often, and I would guess he has a lot of contact.

I'm in New Brunswick, on the mainland about 1500 miles from Newfoundland.

My apologies- was clearly paying attention to the pictures, rather than the prose!

You might see if the Boys/Girls clubs would be interested. Maybe the YMCA/YWCA?

Another source might be the RCMP. LEOs, especially in rural areas, Newfoundland would qualify I believe, are a plethera of information and would be willing to help.

I'd suggest contacting the Maritime Federation of Model Railroaders (MFMR): http://mfmr.ca/

Though they're mainly covering NS/NB/PEI, I suspect that someone there would likely have contacts for folks in Newfoundland.

Hi. I would talk with the folks at Signal Hobbies in St.John's and ask for ideas. There is also the Railway Museum folks.
