I'm planning to visit my son in Washington state this summer. Has anyone ever checked out the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad and Museum?

If you like trains, this is a must. Lots of geared steam and the shops are really great.

I believe for an extra fee, you can ride in the cab. My wife and I did this several years ago. There's also a steam train in Chehalis down the road from Seattle.
They have a dinner train as well, but are in the process of rebuilding their steam loco. For more info : http://steamtrainride.com/ Joe
I went with my wife about 10 years ago. I don't remember the museum, but definitely remember the train ride. Our engine for this trip was an old Climax. I seem to remember the end of the trip was a wye or ballon track, where they let us off to look around for a while. There were lots of old steam donkeys and other miscellaneous logging equipment sitting around rusting away in this area. There was also an ancient diesel switcher doing some work nearby on the way in and out. Very cool experience overall.

My other car is a tunnel motor
A very worthwhile excursion for your efforts in trekking out to the Pacific Northwest. If the family is not "trained out", while you are in the area, the Northwest Railway Museum in Snoqualmie would also be a recommended choice. Both groups have worked diligently and intelligently to preserve both the equipment and the flavor of railroading. Your son will most certainly have a fine list of things to see and do in the time that you have available.
Best wishes for a splendid visit.

I know, Joe. That's where my son and his family live, and I'm planning on riding it AGAIN!
It is one of the best museums for geared and logging engines.
Thanks, everyone for their feedback.
