LAUPT Switcher
Posted by E and E Fan on Thursday, October 30, 2014 5:27 AM

Hi everybody, I'm trying to plan an N-Scale layout modeling LAUPT as well as the nearby 8th Street Yard.  I am into switching as well as Amtrak, so LAUPT is the perfect prototype to model for me. Anyway, I was wondering, does anybody on here know what kind of switching is done at LAUPT/8th Street Yard?  The most I know of it is that they swap out bad order cars and that Amtrak uses Dash 8s and (occasianally) a genset.  Thanks for helping me out!

Trains are brought out of Union Station (no longer called LAUPT) for cleaning and restocking at 8th St, where consists may be adjusted as well. Private cars may be moved from 8th St to the private car tracks at Union Station. A good guide to the specific Amtrak switch jobs is in Charles Freericks's Southern California Locals. http://www.amazon.com/Southern-California-Local-Freight-Trains/dp/1490504133/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1414681099&sr=1-1

There is also a certain amount of freight switching in the general area, at J Yard and the Los Angeles Junction, which this book also covers.
