I suspect that this isn't fresh news but it is the first time I heard about it so I thought I would share:

Boggles my mind to think that it weighs more than 1 million pounds!

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
Though I am not a fan of UP...a former employee yes. I live in UP's stomping grounds, about a 1hour drive from Donner Pass. I am looking forward too seeing it under steam and making a scene on Donner. Be a few years though.

It is good that UP has the money to fund this restoration; there are so many similar projects on smaller locos that are stalled due to lack of funds.....

I just got my issue of Trains 'Big Boy': On the Road to Restoration, a 2014 Trains Extra. A lot of information, stories and a load of pictures of all 25 of the massive locos. It was well worth the price of admission.

Geared Steam!
Thanks for the link!
What a ball it would be to be one of those guys assigned to the move. Talk about being motivated to get up and go to work!
For those interested in further reading and photography of the beginning of restoration efforts on U.P. #4014, you might want to check out this recent Kalmbach publication. Those of you located in or visting Southern California or who live in Nevada and are interested in seeing the Big Boy as it resumes its journey from U.P.'s Colton Yard over Cajon Pass and on to Las Vegas, and Salt Lake City you'll have a great opportunity starting next Monday.

Thanks for the links to Trains Magazine and the schedule.
I watched a few YouTube videos on the move. It's amazing to see this beast on the rails again. Hopefully I'll be able to ride on one of its excursions.
