There is some history of mostly Sugar Plantation trains in Hawaii's past to transport SUGAR/ CANES around. Now they have had some tourist trains running on based on the old lines!!!
AND, as the New York TImes published on January 3rd, 2012,there may, indeed, be begining constrution on a railroad to run around Honolulu and Waikiki and to Leahe, {also known as Diamondhead, the volcano backdrop to Waikiki}!!! They can only hope as the H-interstate highways around Honolulu to outlying areas are crammed! {I can attest to that with a speed limit of 55 you can sometimes be lucky to do 30!} This project was was started In 2007, when a project was initiated for a new Light Rail Transit (elevated metro) line in the Honolulu area.
We will discuss various railroads in the Hawaiian Islands as we move through February!!!

It's been a long day. Wind yesterday hauled my cable down so it's hanging low over the road. I called Suddenlink about and they said they'd TRY to send someone BEFORE Monday. I hope nobody comes by with a motor home or a high truck before then. Relatives said they'd bring me something to eat from town. That was three hours ago. So far no-show. I'm about to say the heck with it and grab a snack then head for the bed.Time to call it a night. See y'all sometime tomorrow.

Anyone here use DCS and if so, what do you think of it? Been watching vids on youtube and I sure like all the "station sounds" when a passenger train pulls into a station. However, if you can't run DCC locos with a DCS transformer, then it hardly seems practical.
Found the CA. based outlet for those Garratts, so might give them a call next week.

Todd. Bear- I thought Australia and New Zealand were like neighbors. You have pretty much the same accent so figured you’re only like 20 miles or so apart.
Pretty much the same accent !!!!!??? I'll excuse you Todd, but to me Aussies talk funny.
Regarding the distance, admittedly while he was young at the time, I have a English relation who thought that it was possible for New Zealanders to walk over to Australia at low tide.
My sister lived and worked in South Carolina for six months in the mid 80s and had to resort to carrying a pocket atlas because it was easier to show rather than explain where she came from, The question that used to make her blood boil, though as a visitor she didn't let it show, was "well if you come from down there, how come you speak such good American ??"

The Bear thinks Aussie accents sound odd... New Zealand takes the cake! It's like a mix of South African and English Although some uccents are thucker thun uthers.
We are friendly neighbours, although we have many sporting rivalries, Cricket, Football (Rugby Union and league) and perhaps the most fierce, netball, Oz and NZ get along well, after all we are the ANZACS. Fighting side by side for many a war under that banner.
It is a bit more than a walk at low tide There still is a continental shelf!

We are under a storm warning. Yesterday, we had gusts up to over 100mph. Hamburg has seen a considerable amount of flooding last night:
That area gets flooded frequently, still there are lots of folks not heeding the flood warning, leaving their cars parked in the flood zone.
No good news about my dad. He seems to have given up and is going down rapidly. I am all sad.
Taking of accent - you should here mine! It´s not like Herr von Flick in that infamous TV show "Allo, allo", but more like the one of Irishman having had one too many. HAven´t spoken the language for years now.

Just found an old film about Hamburg, filmed in 1938. Quite interesting to see. One of the ships shown in the first half is the MV Wilhelm Gustloff, a German cruise liner which was sunk on 30 January 1945 by a Soviet submarine in the Baltic Sea while evacuating German civilians, officials and military personnel from Gotenhafen, occupied Poland, as the Red Army advanced. By one estimate 9,400 people died, which would make it the largest loss of life in a single ship sinking in history
Although much (all?) of the port area was destroyed during the Allied air raids, it again looks pretty much like then.

Kauai:
Hawaiian railroads' earliest history is often credited to the Island of Kauai, whose first system opened in 1881 on three miles of narrow-gauge railroad track at the Kilauea Plantation to haul sugar cane. By 1915 the island boasted over 200 miles of track, all of which served several sugar plantations on the island, although by the 1950s most of the island's railroads were abandoned. Today, Kauai once again has an operating railroad, the 2.5-mile Kauai Plantation Railway, a tourist railroad that operates seven days a week.

Oahu:
The Island of Oahu's railroad history dates back to 1889 when the Oahu Railway & Land Company opened its 12-mile line between Honolulu and Aiea. Over the next roughly 20 years the railroad continued to expand and grow, mostly serving sugar plantations, local industry and hauling passengers.
In the railroad's final form it stretched all of the past Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach to Kahuku, where it served a sugar mill there, including an 11-mile branch to Wahiawa to serve local pineapple fields. After World War II the railroad's infrastructure was almost entirely worn out after heavy use during the war to transport material and troops. As traffic began receding following the war, when a 55-foot tsunami struck the north shore of Oahu on April 1, 1946 the railroad was all but forced to shutdown with the heavy damages inflicted on the property (as well as its customers). Of all Hawaiian railroads the largest was the OR&L, which had double-track operations between Honolulu and Aiea, including block signaling and commuter train operations.
Maui:
The Island of Maui's railroad history dates back to 1890 when the island's large Pioneer Mill, which harvested sugar cane, built a short railroad to better move its product to market. The railroad lasted until around 1950 when trucking and mechanical farm machinery was more cost effective than railroads. However, the railroad did not disappear. In 1969 A.W. "Mac" McKelvy partnered with the Makai Corporation and began the Lahaina-Kaanapali & Pacific Railroad, better known as the Sugar Cane Train. The railroad has become extremely popular over the last 39 years and currently operates six miles of track.

Hawaii, The Big Island:
Hawaii's railroad history is best remembered with the Hawaii Consolidated Railway, one of the state's only standard-gauge railroad operations. The railroad was originally chartered as the Hilo Railroad on March 28th, 1899, to connect the Olaa sugar mill with Waiakea, a distance of eight miles. As the years progressed the railroad made numerous extensions, which included lines to Olaa, Kapoho (17 miles), Hilo itself and later a 12.5-mile line north of Olaa to Glenwood, although the latter was later scaled back in the early 1930s. The railroad continued to grow in the 20th century with a 33.5-mile line up the Hamakua coast.
This extension was extremely expensive with numerous tunnels and bridges which forced the railroad into receivership in 1914. It emerged as the Hawaii Consolidated Railway and continued moving people and goods through World War II (its Hamarkua Division was very popular with tourists). As was the case with the Oahu Railway & Land Company, however, the massive and devastating tsunami on April 1st, 1946 destroyed numerous bridges and washed out the right-of-way in several locations instantly forcing the railroad to shutdown. Today, the Hawaiian Railway Society has rebuilt over six miles of track on the Island of Hawaii, with future plans for further extensions with excursions offered over the railroad. The society is also home to the state's most extensive collection of railroad equipment.

Well I’m not even gonna speculate what I’ll end up doing today before w**k tonight. I know there is an incredibly huuuuuge-o-mongus pile of clothes that suddenly showed up in the bathroom and I have no idea where they came from. Seriously. Where did she have these? There was no pile by her side of the bed and no pile in the bathroom yesterday, but this morning BAM!!!! There it was....is. The door won’t even open fully. I don’t get it. And I don’t get how she can go through THAT many clothes in such a short period of time. It’s…it’s..it’s inhuman. It’s SUPERhuman. Maybe she's an alien. To top it all off….her closet is full. No room. No evidence of where these things even CAME from. I recognize them so I know they aren’t new. I just can’t figure some things out. Probably best to not even try.
I’m starting to think we need a live in laundry person just for her. These new washer and dryers best be tough cause Maytag has no idea what they’re in for with this woman.

Todd - it´s 100 mph or 160 kph, Top windspeed measured yesterday was 180kph or about 112mph. I am just glad that our houses are built a little sturdier and there are hardly any billboards around. The storm dumped 40 empty containers onto a truck yesterday, just seconds after the diver had left it.
Right now, it´s pretty calm, but there is more heading towards us.

Good morning. It's 44° with 83% humidity. The high will be 58°.Getting ready for my mothers memorial service this morning. Just taking a short time out to post this. Woke up to a bed sheet of white this morning! Well, its only about an inch, so I can't call it a blanket! It's a bit nippy out there! My sister is driving up from NC today. She hates sn*w with a passion. Kinda glad she's staying at my other sisters house, that way I won't have to hear her grousing about the sn*w!
Depending on the weather and my son's work schedule, I may go down to see how Mom is this afternoon, as I may have to pick him up after he gets off work. Gonna be a full weekend for sure! Between DJ's work schedule, Mom in the hospital, Sister in town, the Timonium show and the Superbowl, I got lots to see and do!
Ulrich, Sorry to hear about your Dad. I wish there was something we could say to ease the sadness.
Todd. Better to not question her clothing habits. You won't understand. I watch my wife put on 2, sometimes 3 complete outfits before work, only to see the rejects land on the floor. Funny thing, a week later she will take the same outfit (the one she rejected a week earlier) put it on, and think she looks like a million buck in it. And shoes! Sometimes I think I married Amelda Marcos! She has (I kid you not) 1 particular style of shoe in 7 colors! and thats just the tip of the iceberg!

Jeffrey, I know memorial services can be tough, but I know with my Dad's, there were a lot of happy memories remembered, that helped us deal with the loss. Hope you do the same.

Strong winds like that are not uncommon in my neck of the woods. The usually hit us after you folks in the east of the US had a bad storm. The take their way over Greenland, refuel and than dump the load onto northern Germany. People have centuries of experience how to protect their property from strong winds, so damage is little.
Here is what I do when we have those north-westerners:
A family in our neighborhood built a home from a kit imported from Canada. It failed to receive the building inspector´s approval and had to be taken down again -. a costly experiment for the folks.

This morning it was a wind chill of 3 F here (not as bad as Todd and our Diners north of Cape probably had), with air temp of 13 F. Cold enough for me. 8 mph winds had a little edge to them (at least it was a dry cold, eh, Barry? ). Supposed to reach 30 F for our 'high' temp today. Nothin' compared to our NOTB Diners in Canada - they'd still be in short sleeves, or maybe (maybe) a light jacket at most... At least our winds are supposed to die down today, as the high pressure dome moves our way.
Before I pulled out from my apartment's parking lot this morning, I had to put the renewal stickers on my car's license plates. Hard to peel them from the paper backing in gloves, though. This year, I got the 2-year renewal. Figured since I now have to get inspections for my car, at least I can skip a year more until next time I need THAT. (In our state, until the car is X number of years old, they don't require inspection for license plates/renewals)
Ulrich - 100 mph, with gusts to 112? From the radar pic you showed, I'm guessing they are coming from the south? Ah, looks like from your later post, they come from the northwest. Stay inside, definitely! Sorry to hear about how your Dad's doing. will continue.

Todd .... Talk about clothes belong to the female gender. This house has his and her closets with the master bedroom. That did not last long. Quickly, they became hers and hers closets. I keep my stuff in a guest bedroom closet. Guess whose clothes are in the other guest bedroom closets.
Ulrich is having bad weather. James in Oz had some bad weather. Fear not, international friends Down Under, Europe, Canada, etc. The United States Congress is solving the global weather problems, and as a result we must buy only curly-que light bulbs. I'm doing my part because, yesterday, I paid good money to replace emissions equipment in Shelley's car. Let us know when you notice the improved weather. conditions.
