Athearn SD70M-2 or MTH SD70M-2

  • Hello my fello modelers.  I will be looking to increase me locomotive fleet and will be doing so with NS SD70M-2 locomotives.  I think these babies are awesome.  I know Athearn makes them as well as MTH. Does anyone have any preference to which locomotive is better?  Also, does anyone have any luck with purchasing these locomotives from the perspective online stores, it seems that every time I check them out, the units are sold out.  I see a ton of MTH on eBay but I have not seen any Athearn.

  • Hey Trainluver,

I currently own 3 sound + 2 non-sound MTH and 1 non-sound Genesis.  I do have 2 of the new CN SD70M-2s on order.  My opinion;  I prefer the non-sound MTH units where I can install my own decoder.  They are my best pullers on my layout by far and have acceptable details!  I give Genesis the edge on the high end details.  If I could have the shell of the Genesis mounted on the MTH frame and body then it would be great.

  • Where can I order the Athearn Sd70m-2, they seem to be out of stock where I look?
  • I have 2 MTH units including an NS sd70m-2 and they are great. Much higher quality than any of the junk athearn is putting out. Ive seen the athearn model in a few shops and every unit was defective in some way. Lets also not forget athearn also has the headlights that constantly burn out.

At any Athearn dealer.  They are supposed to be available sometime in the new year.
