N scale in-Train Camera
Posted by TheTracks on Monday, August 22, 2011 3:44 PM

After searching the forums I politely request anyone who desires to PM me or post here their opinion on leass expensive ing train N Scale cameras.

Please consider:

Cost.

Fitting the camera into an engine cab.

Ease of operation/installation.

Sound is a bous but not required.

I saw one system at MicroCameras for about $90. Many websites are relatively old and outdated compared to modern tech.

Respectfully,

Thank you for your forthcoming help.

I wish you luck sir.  I am not aware that there are commercially available cameras that would fit your particular requirements.  The smallest mini-cam I am familiar with would just barely fit inside an HO scale car boxcar.  Remember that along with the camera itself, you also have to make provisions for a power supply.  Which usually takes up more space than the camera.  In most cases I have seen, the modelers simply mount the camera out in the open on a flatcar or gondola, and that way they don't have to deal with such restrictions.   I doubt it would be possible to find a camera that fits inside a N-Scale locomotive shell.  Or if you do find one, it would be very expensive.

This a picture of my most recent camera-car project.  It's S-Scale.  The camera is mounted inside the caboose shell and shoots out through the door.  The shell is 1.5 inches wide (OD), by 1.25 inches tall, and 2.5 inches long.  And I had to fight to sqweeze that puppy in there.   The tool box conceales the 9V battery.

I have figured out what is wrong with my brain!  On the left side nothing works right, and on the right side there is nothing left!

Search Google for spy camera. These cameras are about the size of a ballpoint pen. They are suppose to have the audio part disconnected. I have seen them at Amazon.com. Check ebay also.

I did a Google search and these pen cameras can be hacked to get the audio working again.

There are cigarette lighter cameras that will fit on a N scale flatcar or gondola. No, they do not light cigarrettes but sure look like a lighter.

I have ordered one from ebay for about $13.00, free shipping. I have seen a couple videos.

I also have ordered a HD key ring camera that would mount on a HO gondola or flat car. I have seen a couple videos of the key ring HD camera. Both use a Micro SD media card and have a rechargeable battery that gets recharged using the USB to PC cable.

My Nikon and GoPro 900 digital cameras recharge using the USB to Connections also.

N scale or not, that is a GREAT car. I may have to 'borrow' that plan.

Bonus feature, both the lighter and key fob version  also can do double duty  as a portable flash drive for your computer.
