Canadian Pacific decals
Posted by hon30critter on Monday, July 11, 2011 9:12 PM

Hi everyone!

I just purchased 2 locomotives on eBay which I want to repaint in the late 50's Canadian Pacific maroon and grey scheme. One is an RS3 and the other is an FP7 (both Atlas/Kato I believe).

Does anyone know who makes appropriate decals for these two projects? I have seen listings for CP cab units - is that what I want for the FP7?Dunce

So far I have drawn a blank on the RS3.

I would like to use the CP script lettering even though I know it is too early for the era. I just like the looks of it, but I would be quite happy with block lettering if that is my only choice. Any suggestions will be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Dave

I'd try Microscale first, I ordered some black cat decals for a hopper project and by the time they arrived, I was modeling in a different scale!

Jay

Thanks for the link to Microscale.

I noted that they have two different sets of decals - one for 'cab' units and one for 'hood' units. Can anyone explain the difference between 'cab' and 'hood'? Which set would I use for the RS3 and which set for the FP7?Dunce

Thanks

Dave

"Hood" units have hoods narrower than the cab (like a geep or your RS-3) while "cab" units have full-width carbodies, like your FP7.

David

I just figured that out before your post! I have been looking at these things for years and never put 2 and 2 together. Duh.

Hmmm.  I never noticed that before.  Even the FA/FB-2s in their original paint had yellow lettering on a grey background.

There were some hood units (switchers) with yellow lettering, but that was on a maroon background.

....my response was to the post above mine where he didnt offer you the answer you needed.

You're correct, David, but that was because I hadn't noticed the difference in the lettering colours.   Embarrassed

Most diesel decal sets that are available for hood and cab diesels differentiate between the two because they're not always interchangeable (as in this case, because of the lettering colours, but in some cases because of differences in heralds, striping, or lettering sizes).

I did a couple dozen CPR diesels (hoods and cabs) using SMP Accucals (which were the ones with which I was most familiar) and each of their sets included material for both types and for particular manufacturers'  (EMD, MLW, Baldwin, etc.) locos.  It was up to the modeller to pick the correct options.  I was working from photos, so simply matched them for the models.  Because I don't model the CPR, I never noticed the difference in the lettering colours, although, since it matched the photos, I did get it right.  Laugh
