Handlaying Track
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, December 31, 2001 2:14 PM
I would like to handlay the track on my new 4x8 layout. I was wondering if anyone knew of any books or something that had tips and advice (kind of a how-to book I guess) to help me out. Thanks.

The best instructional source for handlaying track that I ever saw was an old Kalmbach video that was made in the mid 1980's. If you can find a copy of it, I suggest that you take a look at it. Although the tape is nearly 20 years old, I don't think that the techniques have changed much. In the LA area, several hobby shops have copies available for rent, so you might check a local hobby shop in your area. Good luck. You have more patience than I do.

John Ostler did an incredible series on hand laying track that began in the January 2001 NMRA Bulletin, which comes with membership to the NMRA. It has terrific pictures and text from a guy who is obviously a master not only in laying the track, but doing the planning and layout. I think it's a must for anyone who is considering hand laying track.

Me, I will stick to flex track, though....

Allen Keller's Great Model Railroads video of Gazette editor Bob Brown's layout is another source of information. Bob Brown has handlaid track for many years, and he offers a number of how-to tips while actually layiing a small section of rail as part of the video.
