Buying 4'x8' sheets of Masonite
Posted by Jake1210 on Monday, April 7, 2008 7:38 PM
Where can I get sheets of masonite? It won't be very long until building starts (as soon as planning finishes and a summer job is secured) and I need masonite for roadbed (I'm using spline roadbed) and the layout facia. I tried checking the Home Depot website, but a search for 'masonite' only brought up doors made from masonite. Similarly, a search for hardboard brought up hardwood headboards for beds. I havent been to home depot in a while, so I'm not entirely sure if they stock it at the warehouses and just don't put it on the website. (I believe I do that with 4'x8' sheets of plywood)

Loews, Home Depot, etc... They don't list commodity items on their sites but they have it.
About $10/4x8 sheet.

don't depend on home despots ( no spelling mistake) website. the're getting to be like radio shack. try any local lumber yards. thats where i get most of my wood for projects. home depot does have the masonite in different thicknesses but i enjoy the personal contact of the lumber yard personel better.

Home depot blows. If you have a local lumber yard, try them instead. I'm betting that if you walked into a HD, Asked for masonite, most in there would look at you like you had 3 heads.

Speaking from personal experience, if you walk into a Home Depot and ask for "Masonite", it is very likely that they will not know what you are talking about.  This is because "Masonite" is a brand name.  However, if you ask the salesperson for "tempered hardboard", I believe that they will have plenty of that! (Also try looking up "tempered hardboard" on their web site.  Probably will show up there also.)

Locally I've seen it in Lowes, Home Depot, and most other lumberyards--you'll probably find it stacked flat with the other "sheets", i.e., paneling, siding, plywood, etc.

Here's a link to Home Depot 'tempered hardboard'...less than $7.00 per sheet for 1/8" thick.

Edit: I forgot he was looking for spline material and not backdrop. Here's the thicker sheet:

Not to take this way off path into a HD sucks thread (which I'm sure it will become), I'm in the business of home improvement as well. 30+ years but Times are pretty tight around here for the last few years so our Cement contractor went to HD for a job. He Did get one. Did they put him where his knowlage would be most Useful for the customers? Censored [censored] NO!! Lawn and Garden... Try and find a person in the electrical department who knows what size wire to use on a kitchen GFI circuit. For that matter find one that even knows what a GFI is (Ground Fault Interupt).

Good luck with your suite (sp?)..

Jake, your gonna want to use 1/4 inch masonite for your spline. I used hardboard (masonite) spline roadbed also. I tried Home Depot but they didnt have 1/4 inch masonite. Good luck with your spline, its a great way to build roadbed im really happy with how mine is comming along.

It's not just the service, but you really need to make sure of the product you're buying. Much of their stuff is a knock off or cheap substitute. Major brand suppliers will build of fabricate to HD specs. Not apples for apples and the slight savings doesn't justify the poor quality.

Bought some PVC exterior casing ( ran short on one slider), The HD version was a cheap composite and not even solid PVC. could barely put a stainless nail through it and chipped even w/ a new 80tooth Freud blade. Absolute junk and only pennies less than the quality stuff from my normal supplier. This is especially true w/ most of the framing lumber and pine also. The S4S hardwood and the hardwood ply are normal quality though.

I call it an I-only-work-here-you-wouldn't-really-expect-me-to-know-anything-would-you? look. I got it for the better part of ten years while trying to find foam; it wasn't until just before Christmas that I finally found foam at Home Despot and then it was by accident while looking for something else.

They do carry Masonite because I saw it the last time I passed through the lumberyard there!
