Smoke generators/DCC conversion
Posted by TRENT B on Sunday, December 7, 2003 2:45 PM
I have a 4-6-4 Hudson Blue Goose from Rivarossi and an SD40 from Athearn.
1st. How and where do I put the DCC chip for the 4-6-4
2nd. How do I install a smoke generator if possible.
3rd. How do I convert my SD into DCC?
Any advise is welcome!
Thank you to all.
Have a Merry Christmas & may your derails be few and far between this New Year!![:D][8D]

Digitrax makes an Athearn decoder that includes replacement motor pickups. DH123AT I believe. Otherwise, any wired decoder can be easily soldered on quickly. The only modification to any Athearn engine is to bend the frame contacts away on the bottom of the motor and place a piece of electrical tape between the bottom of the motor and the frame. This isolates the motor and prevents a short circuit. I used the DH163 in one of my SD40-T2 models and there is plenty of room for it. I also went the extra step and installed LED bi-directional lights. No problems and reacts well in use.
