Do you run a train under the Christmas tree?
Posted by n2mopac on Friday, December 5, 2003 2:31 PM
I am interested to learn what types of trains we have running under our Christmas trees and how it compares to what we mode. I model BNSF modern freight in N scale, But around my tree I have an oval of HO EZ track (sorry to all my N scale cohorts) and I run a 1980's vintage Amtrack train pulled by and F40PH and/or a mixed freight also 1980's vintage pulled by a MoPac SW1200 or a GP 40 (these are the cream of the crop of my leftovers from my earliest dabblings in the hobby when I collected a little HO. Never had an HO layout though.). Tell us what you run around your Christmas train. Is it similar or completely different in scale, era, etc. from you you regularly model?

I'm either run my oval of HO E-Z track with my UP 0-6-0 pulling a couple of frieght cars, or my Hogwarts Express 4-6-0 pulling it's passenger cars. I also have a battery opperated G scale 4-6-0 with a couple of frieght cars.

For the last years I ran mixed freight with different locos each time : the last ones were a pair of Proto 2000 Santa Fe GP 60s. This year it will be a passenger train : a french TGV in Atlantique livery.

My RR is HO scale. The layout is set in the early '50s to resemble the ATSF line following Route 66 across northern AZ.

My Christmas tree train is a battery powered G scale set with Loco, Tender, Gondola and Caboose. I've added a Santa hanging out the window waving as engineer and put small toys in the gondola.

My layout is N-scale, but for Christmas I run an old O-27 Lionel Heavy Iron set under the tree.

Mine is a Bachmann G-scale 4-6-0 Mogul with sound and smoke. It has a tender and 2 passenger coaches. If you have ever seen the first Santa Claus movie, you will have seen my train in the bedroom scene with Tim Allen and his movie son at the North Pole.

And what would be a Christmas Tree be without a Train running under it?!!

My wife says: A lot safer, no grumbling, and no accidental wrecks.

I run an IHC Camel Back hauling three flat cars and a Bobber Caboose with Santa on the running board and Mrs. Claus riding shot gun. There's an Atlas passenger station lit up with a LED string of Christmas Lights, which were bought at Canadian Tire two years ago. The Train runs on Bachmann Snap EZ track. This Christmas Morn I hope to be running a FEF-3 under the tree, straight out of the box.

I'm contemplating running some LGB G-scale under the tree this year - considering buying myself one of the LGB starter sets as a late birthday present, depending on how much they are at my LHS. Prices seem to vary by fairly large amounts - have seen the set I'm looking for advertised for £160 by some stores and £190 by others! On the other hand, they do have sound and a smoke unit, and I can run it outdoors come summer....

Unfortunately I have nowhere to pt a Tree. The Layout takes up the available space ;-)

Yes; New Bright 4-4-0 (roughly G scale, or 45mm track), with tender and three Christmas themed cars. Got it at Sam's Club a few years ago. Walthers offers it for quite a bit more in thier sales flyers.
Nigel N&W in HO scale, 1950 - 1955 (..and some a bit newer too) Now in San Jose, California

I'm running a New Bright train as well, but it's 1" gauge. The scale trains are too delicate for the cats to have access to.
It's not a Christmas tree unless there's a train under it.
