3% grade problem

3%, holy cinders, that sounds very steep to me. In an earlier layout, I had 2% and my p2k Berkshire (or most steamers for that matter, except the Broadway Limited M1a and Niagara) would not pull more than 19 cars, if I remember correctly. Maybe track wasnt as clean as it should have been, but I learnt my lesson. Next layout will have helixes of around 40 inch radius, keeping the incline at less than 1%. I want to run LONG trains...<br>Optimise performance by cleaning wheels and track, but a long-term solution would be to re-design your lay-out... good luck!<br>rik<br>
