Rabbidgerbal: My story is long-winded and I won't go into it right away. Instead, I had an idea that may be of help to you, since it helped me to dream up my own backstory. Get yourself a copy of "The Historical Guide to North American Railroads" compiled by George H Drury. This (or any other similar handbook) contains lots of Reader's Digest-sized histories, and reading them can give you a feel for what a plausible history might be. You may be surprised by some of the case studies, and find an aspect or two that you'd like to work into your own line. Of course, once you start, you'll not want to stop, and soon you'll have a noticeable library. Just read, more and more! I know, that was exactly your purpose for starting this thread, but do you know the saying that truth is stranger than fiction? You'll find that it is true.
