walthers 3 pack 53ft well cars
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, November 22, 2003 6:39 PM
help please.
i just bought this set for use on my sons layout for a x-mas gift from santa.
his layout is based on 18in inside line and 22in outside line.i know they dont
look right on such tight radius but for a 7 year old that dont matter.the problem
i have is they derail on both the 18in and 22in curves.my question is it possible to replace the connecting bars in the middle with a long kadee coupler to allow more room between the cars so they wont derail?if so what kadee coupler will i have to get?thanks...im sure someone has the answer

Hi Rockingham

with long cars like these, the problem is caused by the width of the coupler boxes. Maybe longer coupler shanks could help; Kadee #6 should work well. I have a trio of 53ft well cars like yours and a Walthers 5 unit 48ft well cars that have the same problem and cannot run on my son's layout with a few 18" radius curves. But before converting them to couplers, I will try to make thinner drawbars and maybe trim a little material from the inside edges of the molded-on boxes.
If I go faster than you I will let you know about the result.
