I have a freelanced CSX layout . Free lance is just another way of being creative. YOU create the towns, Industries, and Railroads.

Free lance! Our Oregon and Pacific Midlands is a mythical 3 foot narrow gauge line connecting a tiny port on the Oregon coast, to an SP standard gauge branchline not far from the Willamette Valley. We are free to purshase locomotives from many 'real roads' based on my liking them, rather than on actual history. Same for my rolling stock and structures. I can be free to engage in any whimsy I choose. I do attempt to keep the concept of things in the 'plausable' category so it will someday look like it COULD have been a real narrow gauge, even if the managers bought locos and rolling stock from all over the place.

Hooray for the Freelancers! Protorypical layouts are great if you have the space, resources, etc. I have seen many that really are impressive.

For me, however, I like to model varieties of railroad related scenes that never were but may have been. I have alot of John Deere locos and rolling stock and decided to model a John Deere dealer with a warehouse distribution center under construction. I put my imaginary scene in a small rural type complex that has the UP and ATSF running thru.

I run passenger and freight and have engine service facilities, etc.

I put my timeline as summer of 1960. Though Big Boys were not running at this time and seldom left Sherman Hill, they do run thru "Deere Valley Junction" along with Challengers, F7's etc.

ATSF runs the primary passenger service.

Even though I have picked this date, occasionally a GP38-2 and an F40PH will run through. Freelance is a way to use a variety of equipment without explaining that the equipment didn't exist yet or never was used in a certain type of service.

I have no problem running my Big Boy at the head of a UP passenger consist! Looks super cool!
