The Beetle, Samba and Karmann-Ghia models are actually based on 1960s prototypes but you're probably good to go unless you run across a VW purist. The first VW Beetle hit the U.S. in 1949 and the Samba bus was introduced in 1951 but VWs did not appear in any quantity in the U.S. until 1955, when Volkswagen set up its own distribution network.
