Athough I'm now into my early '50s I only got into the hobby about four years ago.

I bought a lot of stuff at first without really planning what kind of layout I wanted. Started with some N gauge, then switched to HO, then back to N... I ended up selling a lot of it on eBay - in my experience model railway stuff sells quite well (in the U.K. at least) on eBay, and I didn't really lose out that much.

I have also experienced moments of extreme frustration, when I felt like tearing the layout up and giving up. I read loads of magazines, books and websites, which all made it sound so easy, so I thought I must be one clumsy oaf!

But I did persevere, and am building a small On30 layout. My main problem was flextrack - I found it very difficult to lay properly, and some of the joins on my layout are ugly, but it works (besides, as it's a run-down mining layout I figured the real thing would be rough and ready). I've also scratch-built a couple of (very) simple structures - something I never thought I would ever do.

Mind you, if I had the space to build a large HO, or N, layout I'd probably use Kato UniTrack or similar!
