First off, for those of you who responded to my post a few days ago
where I was asking for help in removing manufacturers' road numbers
without damaging the underlying paint, I sincerely thank you for your
help and suggestions. ALWAYS appreciated. I'm relatively new at this
and any/all help is most welcome.

As it was, I ended up simply using a Q-tip with a 99% Isopropyl Alcohol
solution. Excellent results obtained. Just lightly dipped the Q-tip
in the solution, and gently rubbed one way only (rather than
scratching back and forth) until the paint came off.
After each minute or so, I wiped off the spot with a water/liquid soap
solution, dried it, and continued until the paint was all gone.
The only visible sign anything was ever there, was a slight "gloss"
appearance, which I hope will disappear altogether once I get the
new number in place and do a little weathering.

For the record, this was a KATO, SD80MAC loco
(Norfolk Southern road name). Thanks again! Rob.
