I remember the article you're talking about - but I can't find it either. There WAS a similar article in the May 2002 MR - page 64. I believe the more recent article may be better, because it talks about newer, easier to use materials. I have done some moldmaking and resin casting - it's not terribly difficult if you take your time and be careful about how you build the molds (to promote the natural exit of air bubbles).
