Apparently it does have a sound system in the tender, although I know nothing about how effective it might be. Hornby once offered a loco with sound generator (back in their Triang days) that simply had a cam on one tender axle that would rub on a piece of sandpaper to create what has been described as "a rasping "chuff" noise". I think it's been re-released more recently, the loco is an LNER B12 4-6-0. Just mentioning it as an example of how basic some of the early sound effects were!
