Poor site preformance, me or them
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, September 8, 2003 9:32 AM
[xx(] I get lots of page not found errors and slow page loads on this site. I have the same problem using three different computers and two different ISPs. Sometimes, but not often, the pages in the forum load right up, but most of the time it takes 20 seconds or more for the page load times, or I get page not found errors. I even get server not found ocasionally. And posting is becoming a problem, you get a page not found error about 1/3 the time. Hiting refresh and reload don't help either. Like I say, it's just the forum site I am having problems with, on three different computers, using two different ISPs and two different browsers in two different cities. Anyone else having problems??? FRED

Haven't noticed anything unusual, everything working just fine here. Did this just start or has it been a problem for a while? Maybe a long haul link is down somewhere and traffic re-routing is affecting some more than others.

It's been before the last time there was a thread about it and MR said they were fixing a problem (about 2 months). It's never got any better for me. It's also worse at times. Only seems to be this site, I have no problems anywhere else.

I don't have the problem with the page not found or errors, and my loads are not as slow as you say, but they do load somewhat slower than other sites I visit.

It's working fine for me. But I do notice that a dial up connection is slower, normally I'm on a cable modem. Could also be what's between you the site and or time you normally connect. Tell us what two cities you connected from, I'm guessing this site is in or near Milwaukee. I'm in Northern Virginia.

I'm only 25mi from MKE (even though I don't think that matters) and I notice that this site (www.trains.com in general) is one of the slowest sites to load pages that I visit. I try to only go on at work with our T1 line (OK loads, bad for career) because it is painful from the dial-up here at home. I have not had any of the errors mentioned - only slow.

I get lots of page error messages, but also at the Atlas forum lately too. So I'm wondering if it is a snitzl thing or not. Just started up about a week or two ago.

Load time for me on this site is similar to that on others. Recently it has improved. I'm in SOCAL.

Well... [B)]

I understand your fustrations with the problems you have been experiencing. I'll be honest and admit I currently don't have a definite answer or explanation for this. This doesn't mean the problem is going to be ignored. However it may take time to determine exactly what some of the performance problems are and what's causing them. If it were a simple solution, I'd take care of it right now. Unfortunately it's not. There's a lot of code and a lot of factors (some out of our control) which are involved in actual and perceived website performance.
