Look at a copy of the August 1961 issue of Model Railroader magazine. It contains plans and a construction article by Al Kamm on building a FL9 from 2 Athearn F7 bodies.
According to the plans, the FL9 is 59 feet long over the couplers. I do not know how this compares to the length of a F9.

According to the Kalmbach Diesel Referance, the FP7 and FP9's were 54'8'' long while the FL9's were 59'.
