You say your son is a steam entusiast. This is great! A really basic and good running N scale steam locomotive is the Bachmann Spectrum 2-8-0 Consolidation. You may also want to get him a diesel. Athearn and Atlas make very nice good running beginner level N scale diesels. Check out: www.athearn.com www.atlasrr.com www.bachmanntrains.com and www.nmra.com
