Proper Gear Ratios ?

Can anyone direct me to an article on gear ratios and the like ? Ideally the article probably should touch on driver diameter, motor RPM, bevel gears, worm and gear combinations, helical gears, chains and sprockets, gear towers, gear boxes and prototypical speeds for various eras and classes of locomotives. Once the values are determined, then the problem is to search for what are the closest available commercial parts.
