Handlaying N scale track on Easyspline roadbed
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, April 17, 2001 11:42 AM
I am planning my first "real" model railroad and am considering handlaying code 55 track on laminated hardboard spline roadbed. I want to have large (no. 10) turnouts which seem to be hard (impossible?) to find. I'm thinking of using PC board ties every so often and soldering the rail to them. I've seen articles on handlaying track and on spline roadbed, but have not found any information on having the two together. Any comments?

Many years ago at a NMRA convention I visited the home of Gordon Odogard (deceased MR editor) who had hand layed N scale track with PC ties. His work was realy impressive. However he said he'd never do it again. Too much work for too little.
There are old articles on that project but not the spline road bed as far as I know.

If he wasn't sold on handlaying, then maybe I should rethink it. Do you know of any track manufacturers making N scale turnouts #8 or #10? I see Walthers is making #10's in HO. Looks like Micro Engineering, who in my opinion makes the best looking track, only makes #6's. True? I've seen that Peco makes #8's; might have to make do with that.
