Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, April 2, 2006 12:28 PM
Does anyone know of any good model railroad shops in Toronro, and if so, could you please pass me on their address?

Also are there any steam locmotives in or around the Toronto area, either in museums, plinthed in parks or at tourist railroads?

I am visiting the city in about two weeks time, so want ot make the most of my time over there!

With Kind Regards,

Stephen.

Georges Trains is better. There is some pretty good shops west of Toronto too. In St. Catherines, and London Area. If you looking for brass try, Canadian Model Trains in Missauga.

http://www.steamtrain.com/rides.htm
the above has 2 operating ex-CPR steam locomotives

ex-CN 4-8-4 6213 is sitting at the CNE grounds, it's sister 6218 is sitting in Fort Erie

There might be a show on somewhere close by as well.

Georges Trains is mostly overpriced on most stuff but their selection of brass is pretty good.

Credit Valley is a nice shop, found a few items on sale that I was looking for but unfortunately for me, he's on the other side of Toronto from me.

Horizon Hobbies in Whitby is a decent shop as well. This is where I get most of my stuff.

Georges Trains is one of my favourites, John's Hobbies (Danforth east of Woodbine) is excellent also, but with a strong European flavour. Hornet Hobbies is not far away either (still in Toronto) on O'Connor approaching Victoria Park Ave.

All of these can easilly be reached on public transport.

If your loooking for N scale pass on George's. They have a few dusty pieces but thats it. They do have a lot of HO and larger.

Credit Valley's my choice for N and they have a fair amount of HO as well. Only problem is that its quite far from the centre. If youre willing to take the commuter GO train to streetsville its not too far from the station (quick cab ride).

The guys before me named the two best shops. I have been to George's many times and they are excellent. Make sure to get a "Spikes" card. You can save money on purchases over time.

I visited Credit Valley Railway Co.Ltd. for the first time on Saturday and I will definitely be going back. They had Scalecoat Green and Yellow in the old CN livery and decals to match, so my project to convert my engines to this livery is alive and well...They have lots of HO and N scale in stock.

Stephen:
There is also Railview Trains and Crafts, a small store but fairly intense on HO scale. They're located out the Northeast of Toronto (Markham), a long bus ride.
The streetcar museum will, unfortunately, be closed until May.

Nice offer Gordon -

Hi Gordon - thanks very much for the offer - may well take you up on it!

Cut a long story short, I am on a flying visit to Toronto - arrive from the UK on the Friday lunch time and leave on the Sunday evening - basically meeting an old mate for a Stag Weekend! I will have a chat with him and see what he has planned for the Saturday. I have a hunch the only real free time I will have will be the Friday afternoon, but I will have a chat with him again to confirm and see if anything could be rearranged.

I certainly don't want to go out train shopping still drunk from the night before - only god knows how many credit cards I would max out! I would then also have to purchase a few more suit cases to get the stuff home in!

I'll get back to you when I have more info.

Thanks to everyone else for all their suggestions - just so you know I model HO, so my preference would be somewhere which has a large supply of HO.

With Kind Regards,

Stephen.

Stephen, I doubt loud music from the car radio would be helpful with a hangover either [;)]

Let me know asap so I can arrange things with the MRS.

Hi Gordon,

Sorry top take so long to get back ot you - looks like the only time I am going to be able to try and find the odd model shop will be on the friday afternoon, but even so, this is going to be done under duress of the guy who's stag weekend it is.......might try to get him plastered so he knows no different....! Saturday is apparently already organised with a tourist landmark/bar crawl.......the CN tower is in the afternoon, so should be interesting viewing through beer goggles......!

Thanks again for the offer, and if I get over to Toronto for a longer period of time - I'll definatly take you up on the offer - as long as you let us buy you a beer in return!

With Kind Regards,

Stephen.

No problem Stephen.

Pub crawls are important ya know!!!

Keep in mind that our beer isn't as potent as the Limey stuff. My Dad found that out when he came over from London. He stopped drinking when he had his first Canadian Beer. Mind you , that was back in the 50's!
I suppose it's probably like me drinking American beer. Tastes like water [;)]

Have a fun & safe trip!
