Digitrax/MRC problem

I have a new Digitrax Super Empire Builder set to replace my MRC Command 2000. I have a problem with the MRC decoders, they seem to accept the programming from the Digtrax, but then will not work in any function. I have set the 14/28 step speed correctly.
Is there a compatability issue here?

I had a couple of MRC decoders in locomotives on the D&J Railroad several years ago and had to constantly fiddle with them to keep them working. They both finally quit all together and are now somewhere deep in the Stafford Land Fill.
