Hey everyone, im new and I just have a couple of questions I need answering. Im 17 and Im planning a Southern Railway-Norfolk southern Layout. Ive been searching around for Southern locomotives but no one seems to have any southerns in. I really like the Proto 2000 series of E units. I was wondering if they make them with the "torpedo tubes" that Southern Railway is famous for? 2nd question; I just saw this months issue featuring Bob Lawsons Southern Layout. I was wondering if there were any other modelers who have modeled Southern in the early 1940s up to the late days of southern. The E-units and F-units have always caught my eye. If there are any, are there any pictures on the net. 3rd and last questions; Do the new Athearn Genesis F-units run loud. I had such a mixed bag of questions so i didnt know where to post. Thank you.

, you do not say what scale you plan to model in, but I am curious as to your reference to "torpedo tubes' in connection with E units. The only "torpedo tube" locomotives I'm familiar with are GP's equipped with a steam generator for passenger service. This required a water tank for the boiler, which displaced the air tanks under the frame and put them atop the long hood. You might check with some of the larger internet hobby dealers with search capacities and search under "Southern" and "SOU" to see what they have available.
I knoiw for example that Atlas recently made some high-hood GE Diesels in both SOU and NS in N scale which should still be available.

There is a Southern modeler's group on Yahoo! that you should join, and just listen for awhile. The best SR modelers hang out there.
I am going to assume you are referring to HO.
On the E-unit air tanks, you have to do that your self. There was an article in Prototype Modeler 20 years ago or so (see the index) on detailing a SR E-unit. Since the P2K units came out, it is much easier to do.
HO scale SR locomotives (some are not current production, but do show up on ebay regularily or have been announced but not yet available): Athearn F7A/B, SW7; Athearn Genesis F3A/B, F7A/B; Atlas H15-44, SD35, GP38, GP7, RS3, FP7,S4, SD24; Bachmann GP50; Bachmann Spectrum 44 tonner; BLI E6B; ConCor SD24; LL P1K F3A/B, RS2, DL-109; LL P2K E8, E7, E6A/B, GP7, GP9, GP18, SD9, S1; Rivarossi(AHM) E8A; Stewart FTA/B, F3A/B, F7A/B, VO-660, S-12; Walthers SW-1.
Nigel N&W in HO scale, 1950 - 1955 (..and some a bit newer too) Now in San Jose, California

The Southern group on Yahoo is a great place to get started. There is a project running right now on the Southern's Gp-35's led by Bob Harpe. So far no one does the E units with the roof mounted air tanks, but it is an easy detail project. As for doing Southern modeling in the 1940's it is kinda hard because of the uniqueness of Southerns' steam locomotives and they are usually brass models that are prototypical. You will definitly have to learn how to build and attach Cannon & Co. High hoods to loco's other than some of the newer Atlas products. As far as the new Athearn Genesis F units my two run great. Hope to see you on the Yahoo goup this is the address: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SOUTHERNmodeler/

I need some help ! I am new at American railroads, so far have collected Atlas GP7 and GP38 Southern locomotives and half a dozen 40ft Southern box cars, for my new layout. Please advise me on the location of Southern rail and which road names Southern rail would have brushed shoulders with, to add a bit more color to my layout regarding locomotives and box cars,(50 & 60's era). I chose Southern because Southern rail is the area I live in England, UK. Gavin.......
