From day one though I couln't understand why they didn't reverse the direction of the opposite lanes. I suspect the jam would have been just as bad though.. Just twice as wide" <br /> <br />At least it would have been half as long. <br /> <br />Back before WW1 (about 1906) they ran a practice mobilisation... the military "borrowed" the railways and turned the whole system into a huge one way circuit feeding all the troops and reservists onto Salisbury Plain ... it's scarey to think that railways/railroads changed the whole face of warfare... Don't know whether the Franco-Prussian War or your Civil War came first... they were the first industrial wars that allowed troops and munitions to be moved in the modern way... before that they walked. <br /> <br />Maybe someone should write to George W and suggest they one way the freeways when they need to get everyone out? <br /> <br />The idea is way too obvious for government to think of it.
