I can't stress this enough - I would always advise against using pre-designed kits whenever possible. Personally I build everything I use out of polystyrene and general artists's materials, creating textures and colours using my naked eye and interesting materials!

I actually build a UFO of my own on one of my four sets (they are interconnected by switches, so they're complete circuits on their own), I actually built several of them, as it's a recreation of Welles' classic the War of the Worlds. My primary ingredients for them were styrofoam egg cups, cut appropriately and assembled around a very basic balsawood frame , then epoxied and puttied and painted silver. If I do say so myself, they look quite convincing.
