Also, most recent decoders have a way to reset them to their default factory values, usually by stuffing a value in a particular CV, which you may want to do if he did a lot of fancy programming to it (speed tables and such). If you can determine the type of decoders are in the locos, you can usually find the manuals for them on the vendor's website.
