This scheme is reminiscent of MKT's Texas special. According to the "Trains" article they did have some other schemes, but I think this one probably commands the most attention, so that is likely why UP used it.

Jeff Shultz said:
QUOTE: Since they say that they are numbering them in the years that the railroads were "brought underneath the UP shield" how are they going to do the D&RGW and SP? Weren't they both brought in in '96?
As I recall, UP acquired SP who previously acquired D&RGW, so in essence, UP did acquire both in the same year as was already mentioned. What they will probably do is to number the SP unit (1996?) for when UP acquired SP and number the D&RGW (1995?) unit for when SP acquired D&RGW (at least that's what I would do).

Wow! I remembered this wrong. After further reading, I have learned that it was D&RGW that acquired SP (though they kept the SP name), way back in 1988. UP then acquired D&RGW in 1996. This complicates things a little, since the KATY loco already has the number 1988. Now we'll have to wait to see what number they use for these units!

Andrechapelon said:
QUOTE: If the Katy engine is any indication, when they get around to SP, that one will be painted in mud, rust and splattered oil since that's what most SP engines looked like when UP took over.

Give us a break, UP!! When you do SP, do it in proper Black Widow style.
My guess is that when they do the SP unit, it will be in the Daylight scheme. As with the red MKT scheme, the SP Daylight scheme commands attention, so I expect that's what UP will use. Perhaps they should paint one in every scheme of every fallen flag they've acquired so they can keep all their logos and copyrights current!
