I've noticed that when many railroads were first chartered, back before the turn of the 20th century, had awe-inspiring names along the lines of "Charleston Appalachia & Pacific" intimating that they would become transcontinental someday. By the 1950's, though, railroads were beginning their decline, and names by then were much more regional, except for the big Class-1's. "Midland Valley" is an okay name, doesn't sound very much like Oklahoma to me, maybe it is too generic. Pick an OK town name and add it in, say "Tulsa Midland", and it works better. "Kansas Oklahoma And Gulf" could be good; it implies a north-south route to New Orleans or somewhere, with a primary traffic base right in the OK panhandle. An interesting twist might be to assume that it was initally chartered as KO&G, but never managed to achieve the long mainline to New O, perhaps because of favorable trackage rights over GM&O or another real route, perhaps because of its own constant lack of capital, and thus the KO&G name is an emblem of disappointment, of unfulfilled promise. You could dress it up by figuring that the road accumulated a nickname, much like the Nickel Plate Road, which it favored for use by the time you model. Since you model two eras, you could use two versions of the name, like KO&G in the 50's with [nickname] in the 70's.
