Retailers will have to stock less, and the consumer will be able to, I hope, reprogram the sound decoder if they switch it to another locomotive. The possibilities are fascinating!
this already exists , it's called loksound
http://www.loksound.de/en/index.php?showId=2
also the new digitrax decoders are supposed to have downloadable sound , however the ones they've announced are for specific manufacturers engines (kato diesels i think) and we don't know when generic decoders will be available

they sell loksound at my LHS and the sales people are pretty excited about it . unfortunatly they didn't have a demo . the one disadvantage i see is the decoders are fairly expensive ($200+ canadian) and you have to buy a programming box if you want to change the sound in your decoder and it's the same price as a decoder (of course you only need one programmer) . with the new digitrax decoders priced at $60 US (less than $85 canadian) i decided to wait and see
The Tsunami is shipping this week.

http://www.soundtraxx.com/news.htm

First Tsunami's Ready to Ship!

11/12/05

SoundTraxx has announced that the first Tsunami Digital Sound Decoders are now shipping!

Tsunami Digital Sound Decoders are SoundTraxx’s new high-performance, onboard locomotive sound system. Tsunami integrates a full-featured sound system, four Hyperlight lighting effects, a motor controller and a DCC decoder into a single, integrated package and is compatible with the NMRA DCC standards and Recommended Practices. Tsunami Digital Sound Decoders can also be used on ‘Analog’ layouts and controlled with a conventional power pack.

At Tsunami’s core is a true 16-bit Digital Signal Processor, or DSP, capable of executing over 120 million instructions per second. With this new level of performance, SoundTraxx was able to give Tsunami 14 functions, over 22 individual sounds, and 4 special effects including the ability to alter the exhaust sound automatically in response to changes in the engine load. In addition, the use of high frequency PWM and load compensation make for exceptional motor control.

The TSU-1000 integrates a digital sound system, lighting effects and a DCC decoder into a single, miniature electronic module rated at 1 Amp. It is currently available in six steam versions, each with unique whistles, bells, airpumps, exhaust and more. Tsunami is priced affordably at $99.95.
