Before the State stepped in in the early 1900's and regulated the fuels burned by locomotives, it was not uncommon to have fires burn hundreds of thousands of acres of forests here in the Adirondacks in a single fire season. <br /> <br />Fires were pretty much business as usual along the D&H & the NY Central lines until conversion to oil & some regulation of logging practices, such as clearing slash along the ROW was instituted. <br /> <br />Trains are pretty gentle today, by comparison. <br /> <br />Wayne
