i know that there is some sort of formula for planning switches as in 6 inches srait and 1 inch over is a such and such number swithch. i would just like to know if anyone knows what the formula is.

THE formula is: 6 inches straight and 1 inch over would be a number 6 switch.....8 inches straight and one inch over would be a No.8 turnout, and so on. However if it is 8 inches straight and 2 inches over I believe it would be a No.4 turnout. Thus the formula for the turnout number would be inches straight divided by inches over------> 8/2 = 4 and 8/1 = 8
