Tower 55 Locomotives-Strength inquiry
Posted by Junctionfan on Saturday, August 20, 2005 7:07 PM
What kind of power do thease locomotives have? Are they as powerful as Kato and Athearn Genesis like models or more? What kind of traction do they have?

I am thinking on buying the CSX SD70ACE when out but I want to know if it can pull long consists before I invest so much money into it.

Well then, what is Overland's locomotives like? I am assuming it is the same drive just stuck into a plastic shell instead of brass.

I have one Overland brass loco, an SD40-2. It runs very well although the motor has a distinct whine. It's not really loud or objectionable though... I've got BB Athearns that are noisier. The drive is kind of unique in that each axle has a small gear box instead of having one big gear box for all 3 axles. All axles are powered and fully sprung but only 4 wheels on each truck pick up electricity, thru wires that rub against the back of the wheels.
As for pulling power, it seems as good as most of my other diesels. There's also room inside to add more weight, if needed. The Tower 55 models will probably have less extra space since they'll have the decoder/sound module/speakers inside.
If Overland does use this same drive the Tower 55 models should be decent runners, IMHO. I'm as curious about them as you are... I'm interested in that 3-unit turbine myself. Time will tell...
