Spectrum Southern Pacific GS-4???
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, June 5, 2005 9:36 AM
I've heard rumours that Bachmann are going to upgrade their GS-4 loco to Spectrum standard, much like they did with the Norfolk and Western 4-8-4.

Can anyone confirm this and give me any idea when it will be produced, or was this just a bit of idle chitter-chatter that should be dismissed?

On the same subject does anyone know what new Steam Loco is next in line for produceing from Spectrum?

Regards,

Stephen.

I've heard that it is official, but there's no release date yet.

Well if that is the case I'd better try and sell my old one before the prices crash out on them!

Just wondering whether I should also part company withe the Athearn Steamliners to with them - might look a bit cruddy next to a Spectrum model - but saying that who else prodcues streamliners in Daylight livery that are significantly better then the Athearn ones (for a similar sort of price or there abouts)? No one! I've got some of the IHC smoothsiders - but am selling those seeing as they are not that great either.

Lets hope they do 4449 - at least you can then run that on a modern or steam era layout!

Regards,

Stephen.

I'd hang on to those Athearn streamlined Daylight cars if I were you--unless you want to invest in brass. I've got them hooked up to my Balboa brass GS-4 and they look just fine, so if Bachmann comes out with the GS series in Spectrum (hope, hope!) you won't have any trouble. Besides, at 72 scale feet, the Athearns are just a little shorter than the prototype Daylight cars, anyway. If I recall correctly, the original Daylight cars were 75'.

Tom,

Thanks for the advice! I'll put them back in the stock cupboard and probably invest in some new diaphrams for them then!

Have you used the car number sticker provided by Athearn, or are there any other ways of numbering the cars? All my cars are the Blue box variety - before they started producing the RTR ones. The stickers supplied are not that bad, but of course you do see the white edges of the paper, which makes them look a bit toy like (or is thie me being hypercritical?).

Stephen.

I agree with Tom, my Athearn streamline Daylight cars look just fine behind my Balboa GS-4 . Properly weighted and just a few added details to suit and you're in business.

In regards to the number sticker, just take a red or black (as you prefer) "Sharpie" marker and go around the edges with it; works great .

T'is not a rumor. It was supposed to be out winter 2003 but for some reason they keep pushing her back and doing every other steam engine instead. I WILL obtain the black unskirted version. I MUST.

The next Specrtum steamer in line is the USRA light 2-10-2, due somtime soon.
