NMRA HO wheel profile and how it relates to friction?

I think everyone got a bit off-topic here. [:)] <br />The original question isn't about friction in the axels, it is about friction on the curve because of different distance inside and outside wheels have to travel. This is why we have differentials in our cars, but rail cars DON'T have them. So they made a solution by shaping wheels properly. NMRA wheels also shaped specially, they are not flat, they form a slight cone. I wonder why ?
