N&W sub of Southern!

Just saw on Fallen Flags section of this program that indeed, N&W is a subsidiary of Southern as of 1990, and Southern changed its name to Norfolk Southern. Some don't believe it. What do you think about it?

Southern merged with Norfolk & Western to form the Norfolk Southern some time ago in 1982.I'am sure that the N&W is a sub. of the NS as is the Southern also.

Yep thats true, but the reason N&W and S&R merge to create N&S was to compete with CSX.

If you think that is something check the CSX family tree look closely at the Chessie railroads and the merger dates.

The N&W and Southern merger was interesting because both railroads at that time ran some of their engines long hood forward or had quite a few high short hood units. In mergers like this the two railraods keep their original reporting marks mostly for unions I believe. If you look at the Conrail split, all of NS equipment was marked as PRR and CSX was NYC. I know that the EL union was also active in Conrail.
