Ho Walthers American Locomotive Crane.
Posted by donny2001 on Tuesday, May 3, 2005 11:36 PM
I noticed Walthers is retiring some of the American Locomotive cranes. I am picking up one Thursday for my layout. I am fairly new to the DCC world, but was wondering if anyone used DCC in this crane? If so Do tell.

Also when Im there Id like to pickup a book on Dcc as I am starting to DCC my layout while my dad and I are working on it. Any suggestions on a goodbook for DCC?

DCC is so simple you dont need a book, BUT, the Big book on DCC is a great one, as is the other one (I cant remember the name but its from kimbalch. (how ever you spell that) as for DCC operation of that, I will look into it, But I am sure its like all the other loco's. If you have not bought a DCC system yet, I highly recomend any of the Starter kits from Digitrax. I love mine, have had it for about 4 months now and its flawless. You also get a WHOLE lot for your buck. IN addition, All the best decoders come from Digtrax , IMHO, SO you are getting 100 percent compatability!

BTW< there is a Digitrax Catalog that has more info then most books on DCC in the catalog that you can probably pick up from your local hobby shop. The catalog gives you precise info on exactly what the item is and whats it used for and gives starter info as well! its probably free as well. I can allways talk my dealer outta things like this, But then he talks me in to pulling all my money outta my wallet later on, dazzling me with some new loco or scenic.

We have installed a decoder in the Walthers crane. We used the DZ143 Z scale decoder from Digitrax.

We had to install extra wheel pickups for electrical power as it would stall on most of the turnouts. I do not have my frogs on my layout powered but once I put the extra electrical pickups on, it ran smooth.
