Lionel HO Train Set
Posted by rtraincollector on Tuesday, April 26, 2005 5:51 PM
I have a lionel (HO) train set #9904 I can find no info on it no matter where I look. I have been told by collector he thinks it may be a promotional set of some type by either a dealer ship or lionel. But can't give me any more info. I will tell you what it has and the condition of all items are excellant other than original box which I would give it a 7 maybe 8 out of 10. The set contains NYC GP-9 # 0598, Rocket Fuel Tank Car #0815-60 , Turbo Missle car with 2 original turbo missles (I guess original), Exploding boxcar 0847, Mercury capsal car with 2 capsal's (again original I guess)# 0813-200, Caboose # 0841, 6 18" curve track 3 9" straight track one is for cars to go across and rerailer/uncoupler. transformer and one piece of paper work it apears it has not been run much but I did get the engine to run and I properly lubed it . I normally collect O/O27 lionel and don't go for HO but this one caught my eye and the price was right.

Might be best to ask this question on the Trains.com Classic Toy Trains forum, where the collectors hang out.

I believe Athearn made the Lionel HO sets back around 1963. I have a partial catalog
buried somewhere. I will try and match your descriptions and get back to you tomorrow AM.

I believe the first Lionel HO in the 50's was made by Rivarossi. I remember reading an interview with Laurence Cohen in an old issue of RMC (oops - can we cay that here? [:D]) and it mentioning Rivarossi. Athearn did a later release, and I think yet a third manufacturer was involved in the other attempt at HO.
I had the exploding box car, missile launcher, and atomic car, got decent money for them on eBay even though they were obviously used, not pristine NIB examples.

rtraincollector. Those items appear in the Lionel 1963 - 37 page Catalog that includes, Lionel, HO & Racing /Motor Car accessories.

If you want to get your Diesel running better, I suggest you get yourself a $3.50 , two ounce tube of MAAS, a metal polish/cleaner and clean those pick-up wheels.

Turn that engine over, run jumper wired clips from the rails and the other ends to the pick-up wheels and throttle up & start cleaning.

Chances are they have not been cleaned in 42 years.
I used the same cleaner on their Pacific Steamer drive/pick-up wheels.

Although these are antiques they generally don't command a premium price.

Athearn DID make some of the engines for Lionel in the 50's and 60's. To my mind comes the little "Hustler" 4 wheeled switcher, the "electric ELC" that was in PRR, Virginian, and I believe NH paint schemes, and I want to say the GP 7/9 series as well. The same went with some of the rolling stock.

I once saw a Hustler model that had a geared driveline as opposed to Athearn's rubber band drive. Was this a Lionel model?

Yes Bob. I lubed the gear on one about a year ago.

CORRECTION: I lubed the Minneapolis/St.Louis husky, a two axle unit.
