Interior layout of a GP38-2
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, September 23, 2002 11:51 AM
I'm trying to model a GP38-2 that is in the process of a major rebuild. I have the EMD prime mover from a Walthers kit, but I need help laying out the other components.

I do have the interior diagram of a GP18, but i want to be sure the equipment in the radiator/cooling area is the same.

Does anyone know where I can find a drawing of this?

My article, "Closeup: How a diesel works," on pages 84-85 of the September 1984 MODEL RAILROADER, includes an internal arrangement drawing for a GP40-2. That's very much like a GP38-2 except that the 38 lacks a turpocharger and has dual exhaust stacks directly above the exhaust manifolds.

If you don't have that issue you can order back issues from the Trainshops section of this site. If Sept. '84 is out of print, you can order a photocopy of the article by e-mail from customerservice@kalmbach.com.

Good luck with your model,

Andy

Thanx Andy.

I don't have Sept 84 in my library of back issues, so looks like I'll have to see about a back order.

I appriciate your help.

BlackhawkO4, the internal layout of the cooling section of the GP18 is more like the GP's, and these frames are called the first generation engines. The Walthers model of the EMD Series 16V567 engine you have matches these locomotives. The GP38 uses the EMD Series 16V645, which is slightly different in appearance. Thanks Andy, you've made my life better, thanks for the link, to The Research Source! Enjoy Your Hobby! ACJ.
