Trying to restore paint on a 027 metal Marx box car

I have a metal 027 box car that was repainted when I was a child. The car original paint was never sanded just painted over does anyone have an idea on how to remove it. The car was in the NYC Pacemaker theme. What type of paint that was used to repaint the car is unkown. If it was plastic I would try brake fluid.

It might be better to post this question on the Classic Toy Trains forum on this site.

I recently cleaned up a Penn Line caboose that I'd painted, about 40 years ago, with Floquil (and Testors) paint. I used brake fluid, and it cleaned it up nicely. Even left the original road name & number, while it took the Floquil and Testors off.

Also had a Lionel metal caboose that I'd painted with model airplane dope (also about 45 years back). Managed to clean it up with brake fluid and lacquer thinner.
