I am wanting information about the old Cumberland Valley Branch of the PRR that goes from Hagerstown, MD, to Winchester, VA. Does anyone have a source for this information, old photos...

I guess you will be familiar with the PRRT&HS ? If not, visit their brilliant web site. Take a look at the on-line Pennsy modellers magazine and maybe join the society for access to their vast resource of PRR information.www.prrths.com will put you in the jump seat.

Have you tried the Winchester Historical Society? While not railroad specific, local historic societys usually have some information and photos.

I do have some questions regarding the old Pennsylvania/Penn Central Metroliner MU trains.

There's plenty of exteriior photos of these unique trains. However, well detailed info on specs, maintenance, performance, interior photos, etc., seems hard to come by.

Well the original effort top upgrade the ciorridor was a givernment pushed idea to compete with other countries upgrading their passenger service (read Japan and France primarily). I believe it was the Johnson administration but could be wrong. The cars were rushed and untried and had numerous quality issues which eventually were worked out to some degree. The last I saw the cars was being used here in the midwest as Amtrak control cars on the back of push pull trains to Michigan from Chicago. You could tell them becasuu they still had the level srufaces on the roofs for the pantographs. Even pictures of the exteriors in PRR are hard to come by since the merger took place before they were placed in service. As I recall Trains had some pictures around the time the service started of the interiors and several comments about crappy service. Interior shots of new passenger cars are hard to come by for nearly every car. So much so that there is great debate about floor colors, seat colors and the color of the sahdes. If you join prr-talk I'd bet somebody has that info posted somewhere. By the way the cars never saw service as PRR cars and only a few were ever painted that way - other than the six on my railroad!

MR did an article on the Cumberland Valley system in the August 1981 issue. The layout (with drawing) was built in N-scale by the Reid brothers. The original route was with the PRR,Western Maryland,Reading Lines,and the Norfolk Western.If anyone wants this article,let me know off list at my email.
