Very small, very light, not much room for decoder unless you fill up the cab. Out of production for a long time so it may not be easy to find. We are hoping for an updated version.

The Walthers SW1 is a decent little locomotive. It won't pull the paint off the walls, but for a little locomotive that's only supposed to be 600 horsepower anyway, it does rather well.

The first ones Walthers brought out used a piece of rubber tube to connect the motor to one of the gearboxes- it was a little stiff, and Walthers offered a replacement plastic driveshaft and socket set to give a bit more flexibility. This helped a lot.

You're definitely looking at having to install the decoder inside the cab. An N scale decoder will do the job nicely.

I have two of these little beasts and love them both. They do run a bit on the noisy side but, other than that they are good runners. I put n scale lenz decoders in mine and was happy with how easy they were to install.

As above, a good running engine. Does not pull a lot, but neither did the real one. Walthers still has the drive shaft upgrade parts(free). A good upgrade is to replace the brass wheels with N/S wheels fron the Atlas S2/4(available direct from Atlas). Cannot remember what decoder I have in mine, but many of the new decoders are so small, it should be no problem.
