Ask the hobby shop to order it, order it online, or order it via mail.

Check out local sign shops, the use different thicknesses of styrene for signs, and buy it in 4 by 8' sheets. Maybe they will sell you some of their leftover pieces.

A friend of mine just ordered a 4' x 8' sheet of .040" from Great lakes Plastics in Buffalo Ny. The cost for the sheet was around $18.00 - $19.00. I am not sure if they ship or not but if you are in the area they are on Broadway just east of Frontier Yard. http://www.greatlakesplastic.com/

Look for industrial plastics suppliers. I got two sheets of 72"x40" .020" styrene for $3 each to make my roads, 4x8 sheets cost maybe $7 for .040"--your price may vary. Check your local phone book.
