What scale are you interested in? For N scale, there are two top-notch intermodal suplliers: Deluxe Innovations and Alan Curtis Models. The principal over at Deluxe Innovations is an intermodal junkie. www.deluxeinnovations.com

In deference to our hosts, I believe Kalmach also has published a book on intermodal operations, may be worth looking into for ya.

Ben,
In addition to the good suggestions already given you might want to join the intermodal group on Yahoo:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/modelintermodal/
But it doesn't get into the earlier rail-marine interface.

If you're looking in HO, good luck! Intermodal equipment seems to be getting hard to find. Athearn have offered single double-stack cars (their own and one "inherited" from Rail Power Products), drawbar-coupled 3 unit cars, 5-unit articulated cars, and the Impack spine cars - all getting hard to find. Walthers have offered single and 3-unit double stacks (different design to the Athearn ones), 5-unit articulated spine cars (can handle both containers and semi-trailers) and the "front runner" 4-wheel spine cars. Both have also offered the 85' flatcars with either trailer hitches or container mounting pins. There are other manufacturers out there, these are the ones I've seen though. Hope this is of some help!

A-Line makes models of 40' well Thrall, 40' well (end units) & 45' well (middle units) Thrall, & 40' Well Gunderson 5-unit container cars. They also make a 48' well Husky-Stack.

I am guessing the Athearn single well car you are referring to is the 56' well RTR. Last millenium they offered a 48' well Husk-Stack as a kit (introduced in the September 1993 issue of Model Railroader). I have three and like them.

Here is a site about containers:

http://www.robl.w1.com/Transport/intermod.htm

I tried to sell my two cents worth, but no one would give me a plug nickel for it.

I don't have a leg to stand on.
